Getting Married in a Virginia State Park

A wedding at the Douthat State Park amphitheaterThe beautiful and romantic scenery of our Virginia State Parks makes for a memorable wedding. From a simple ceremony to an elaborate wedding and reception, we have a venue for you!

Here is some advice.

1) First pick what style wedding you want - simple or elaborate.

2) Will you want to have your reception at the park too? We have options running from picnic shelters, to full blown conference facilities depending on the Park.

3) At most locations, alcoholic beverages will not be allowed (the exception is those parks with interior conference facilities).

4) At minimum contact the park staff and arrange for a special use permit.

5) If you get married outdoors in the park, please keep in mind it is a public area which means we do not close the park or area for your wedding.

6) Depending on the park, there may not be a good rain location in case of inclement weather.

If you were married in a Virginia State Park or honeymooned in one, share your story with our readers by clicking here. Sharing your story will put you in the drawing for a chance to win a week's cabin stay at any of our parks.

This gazebo at the Cedar Crest Conference Center, Twin Lakes State Park, is a nice spot for a wedding. The conference center is great for the reception.

Hungry Mother State Park is a great wedding spot with beautiful outdoor locations and full catering options in multiple indoor and outdoor settings.

We'll be blogging about various wedding venues in our parks over the next few months. So keep checking back!

VA State Parks provides some of the best settings in the state for weddings. Our daughter got married at Claytor Lake many years ago. We lived in Pulaski county at the time (further along the New River) and even had a friend provide a pontoon boat as their transportation from the park to Hiwassee. What a wonderful setting and day. Thank you State Parks.

We're considering a May wedding at Hungry Mother. I love Claytor Lake but it looks too small to accomodate us. I'm looking for others who have gotten married there. If you have, please leave a message.
