IT IS A PHENOMENON CALLED LEAF LITTER.
Fall is quickly approaching so make your plans to enjoy some Leaf Litter yourself. Tourists come in droves from all around the world and USA to see Virginia with her variety of leafy trees in the Fall. The Leaf Litter in the Blue Ridge and Shenandoah is intense, what we call trash the forest calls dinner!
What is Leaf Litter?
Nutrients that come from decaying leaves are a vital and constant value for the growth and death of our forests here in Virginia. Leaf Litter is an important short term nutrient pool, because it quickly decomposes and recycles. The build up of leaves on the forest floor creates a layer of nutrients and life-filled (organic) litter on top of the soil. This layer acts as food for many bacteria and other microscopic organisms as well as larger decomposers such as millipedes. But more importantly, it provides a way of recycling nutrients back into the forest through the soil. As leaves break apart, the nutrients are released and absorbed back into the ground, where they help feed the vegetation in the surrounding area. Without decaying leaves, it would be impossible for reforestation to take place.
Not all leaves that fall in the forest end up on the forest floor. Many fall into streams, where they becomes just as vital to the aquatic ecosystem. In fact, the primary energy source for Appalachian Mountain head water stream ecosystems is leaves.

There is so much to love at Virginia State Parks, even the litter is adorable. (Millipedes...some might say they are cute too!)
